CIF Safety Week 2019

This year’s CIF Construction Safety Week ran from 21^st-25^thOctober and Tandem Project Management was proud to participate.

Tandem ran a host of events over the course of the week ranging from guest speakers, demonstrations, videos, Q&As, group discussions to health and safety quizzes and a prize giving.

Key topics covered included; Mental Health and Wellbeing in Construction, Working Safely with Electricity, Working Safely at Height, Vehicle Risk & Safety in Lifting Operations and Working Safely with Hazardous Substances. Tandem employees, contractors and even clients also got involved and added their CSW Health & Safety Pledges to the Tandem safety pledge board.

The week started with a presentation on Mental Health and Wellbeing in Construction, which included some staggering statistics on suicide in the Irish Construction Industry and tips on what we can do to protect our mental heath and how to find support.

Discussions continued all week with Adrian Jones, Tandem EHS officer, leading the dialogue, and guest presenter, Anthony Flood from Maor Scaffolding, who had expert advice for working on or around scaffolding and elevated work platforms.

The week was a great success and allowed us all to stop, think, and put safety first, something Tandem pledges to always do.

Tandem Thanks Contractors for Safety Performance

Tandem Project Management puts safety first on all design and construction projects. On Friday 2^nd August 2019 Tandem ran the latest in a series of Project Safety Mornings. The event was run for all contractors working on a construction project at the Alexion biologics manufacturing facility, in Athlone, Co. Roscommon. It was an opportunity to pause and thank contractors for continued levels of engagement with EHS systems and procedures on site.

The morning’s events focused on live services and associated hazards and included a co-ordinated cross-trade health & safety walk down, a health & safety quiz with spot prizes, the monthly EHS prize giving and presentations from members of the project Safety Action Team (SAT). The morning culminated with a full Irish breakfast for all contractors before the bank holiday weekend.

The morning marked over 80,000 hours without a Lost Time Injury on the project. Contractors were commended on their compliance, engagement with and participation in Tandem Project Management Safety Initiatives. Tandem Project Management would like to thank all participants in contributing to such a worthwhile and successful event.

Tandem Puts Safety at the Top of the Agenda

Tandem Project Management puts safety first on all design and construction projects. On Wednesday 31^st July 2019 Tandem hosted the latest Health & Safety review meeting attended by Directors from each of the contractor companies working on a construction project at the Alexion biologics manufacturing facility, in Ahtlone, Co. Roscommon.

The monthly Directors’ meeting includes a full site health & safety walk down followed by a round table meeting to discuss EHS statistics, trends, incentive schemes, audit and inspection results, developments in site H&S procedures and upcoming events. It also provides a valuable forum for continual improvement, information sharing and collaboration.

The meeting marked over 80,000 hours without a Lost Time Injury on the project. Contractors were commended on their compliance, engagement with and participation in Tandem Project Management Safety Initiatives. Tandem Project Management believes strongly that health and safety should always sit at the top of the agenda.

2019 Undergraduate Programme

We were delighted to welcome six students to Tandem Project Management as part of our 2019 Undergraduate Programme. We welcomed engineering students from University College Cork, Cork Institute of Technology and University College Dublin, Ciara O’Connor (B.Eng. Civil), Shakil Rahman (B.Eng. Civil), Liam O’Connor (B.Eng. Process), Michael Cantillon Murphy (B.Eng. Mechanical), Nicholas Hourigan (B.Eng. Electrical) and Roisin Hickey (M.E. Engineering with Business). The students had the opportunity to work in our design offices and on site, and were mentored by our senior team members throughout their internship. Working on site allowed the students to learn the social and communication skills they need to work in teams, liaise with contractors’ and deal with clients and communities. We would like to thank these students for their positive contributions to the team to date and we hope to see them entering our Graduate Programme in the coming years.

EHS & Wellness Initiative Nutrition Event

As part of the Tandem Project Management EHS & Wellness Initiative Mary Carmody of Mary Carmody Nutrition came to Tandem head office to give a nutrition talk and demo. Tandem personnel were treated to an interactive presentation covering the importance of nutrition in our overall health and wellbeing. There were sample smoothies, snacks and plenty of practical, easy tips on how to make nutritious, healthy food and snacks that work well in our busy modern lives. Mary also had her Tanita scales (as seen on Operation Transformation) and offered individual confidential consultations to all Tandem personnel.

Tandem strives to promote the importance of health & wellbeing both at work and in the daily lives of its personnel. Thank to you to Mary and Tandem personnel for participating in the latest EHS & Wellness event.

Tandem Project Management Puts Safety First!

The event included co-ordinated cross-trade health & safety walk downs, guest Health & Safety key note speaker James Gorry, a Tandem Project Management Safety Prize giving, and interactive presentations from the Client, the Tandem Project Management Construction Management Team, EHS and the Tandem established project Safety Action Team (SAT; a cross functional safety team empowered to deal with all safety issues and safety queries on site regardless of which contractors are involved) covering a wide range of topics.

The event marked over 50,000 hours without a Lost Time Injury on the project. Contractors were commended on their compliance, engagement with and participation in Tandem Project Management Safety Initiatives. Over 1000 Safety Observation Reports have been submitted by contractors since the beginning of the project, testament to the emphasis placed by Tandem on safety and continual improvement. Tandem Project Management would like to thank all participants in contributing to such a worthwhile and successful event.

Operational Readiness

Tandem can offer our clients Operational Readiness Services to assist in preparing the client and planning for the handover of a capital project to operations. We work with the client team to establish what key activities and associated actions need to be completed by each function to ensure readiness for the next phase of the project, prior to and including commercial operations. We work collaboratively with our clients to think objectively about what tasks are essential, to project manage the volume of work, to establish roles and responsibilities between functions with the aim of ensuring all areas are ready for the next milestones in the project life-cycle .

We use our extensive industry knowledge to help our clients develop the steps necessary to ensure successful start-up of their facility. We can provide the software tools to support both people and workload management, as well as providing Operational Readiness progress tracking and monitoring for reporting to the Client’s key stakeholders and sponsors.

Building Regulations Part L

“Part L 2017 Conservation of Fuel and Energy for Buildings other than Dwellings”

10 years on from the last Building Regulations Part L issue, new legislation has passed and became effective in January 2019 for new, existing, renovated and altered buildings.

The main aspects of the Technical Guidance Document are as follows:

There is a considerable tightening of the requirements for Clients, Designers, Project Managers and Contractors.
By December 2020 all newly occupied building will be a Near Zero-Energy Building.
It will need to be considered in terms of budget, programme, building layout, planning compliance, occupancy and construction compliance.
The energy improvement over the 2008 edition is an uplift of 40-60%.
The main standout constraint is that 20% of qualifying buildings energy must come from a renewable source.
Major Renovation over 25% envelope now carry considerable requirements.
Thermal Bridging now must be accurately calculated.
Equipment now have defined performance criteria including heating and cooling plant, motors, controls & lighting.
This legislation and technical guide includes the Energy Performance Buildings Directive, Nearly Zero-Energy Buildings & EcoDesign Regulations.

A new or renovated building must pass analysis for planning permission and Tandem Project Management are experienced and prepared to deliver in accordance with the latest legislation.

‘Team Up for Safety’

Tandem’s ‘Team Up for Safety’ Initiative has been developed to encourage a safe, collaborative working environment on our construction sites where all personnel are encouraged to engage in continually improving our approach to Safety Management.

The key components of ‘Team Up for Safety’ are:

Integrated, multi-disciplined ‘Safety Action Team’
Worker engagement in site walkdowns
100% tracking of Safety Observations to closure
Buddy system for new starts on site
‘Safety Days’ to celebrate project achievements and give focus to worker health and wellbeing
‘Take 5’ system for workers to assess all activities before commencing and after each break

Tandem Project Management is proud to have partnered with the CIF for Construction Safety Week 2018 and is delighted to have been actively involved in promoting industry best standards. The objective of Safety Week was to continue to highlight the issues of health and safety in the Irish construction industry and to drive continual improvement.

We ran a series of events across our construction sites to mark CIF Construction Safety Week. The events included Tandem toolbox talks on CIF’s daily safety topics and an interactive ‘Safety in Numbers’ workshop. The aim of this workshop is to challenge attendees to think about how they view health and safety in the workplace and re-evaluate its importance from the individual and team perspective. Attendees were presented with a certificate on completion of the workshop. We also shared the daily topic posters across sites and on our social media platforms to raise awareness and promote Construction Safety Week to our employees and followers.
