UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s)

The UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG’s) are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice.

Many of Tandem’s operations and initiatives are in line with the UN SDG’s.

Tandem delivers high quality, energy efficient projects to clients, ensuring that the infrastructure that it designs and builds is sustainable and where applicable Tandem delivers nearly Zero Energy Buildings (nZEB). Tandem designed its head office to ensure minimal impact on the environment through energy saving air conditioning systems, heat recovery units, smart controls for energy use, water saving systems, enhanced building insulation and occupancy sensing LED lighting. Tandem’s contribution to the SDG’s is through limiting the impact that our operations have on the environment and in doing so it supports UN SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13 (Climate Action).

Tandem delivers Energy and Carbon Reduction projects for clients. Projects such as Solar PV Installations, heat recovery and Rainwater harvesting save money for clients and also reduce fossil fuel consumption, pollution and greenhouse gas emissions. Tandem’s work on projects to treat wastewater coming from industry protects the environment and reduces water loss due to pollution. Tandem’s project work supports UN SDG 6 (Clean Water and Sanitation), 7 (Affordable Clean Energy), 12, (Responsible Consumption and Production), 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water) and 15 (Life on Land).

Tandem provides a safe place to work, employment that is fairly paid and a workplace where wellbeing is valued. Tandem’s core values give employees the opportunity to develop in their careers and to be the best that they can be through mentoring, education and training. Tandem participates in STEPS, STEM and iWish programmes to promote engineering education to young people. Tandem hosts Transition Year students and offers work-placements to undergraduate students. Tandem delivers a three-year engineering graduate programme, of which 50% of graduates are female. In doing so, Tandem supports UN SDG’s 1 (No Poverty), 3 (Good Health and Wellbeing), 4 (Quality Education), 5 (Gender Equality), 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth) and 10 (Reduced Inequalities).

Tandem’s company growth has allowed it to give back to others by supporting charities, clubs and societies. Tandem engages with charity partners each year with the aim of enriching the lives of people in its community. Tandem participates in fundraising activities and also undertakes ‘helping hand’ projects. Tandem has supported Down Syndrome Cork, Focus Ireland, Make-A-Wish Ireland, Cork Penny Dinners, The Rainbow Club Autism Centre and many more. Tandem’s core values include collaboration, it upholds teamwork and partnerships in all of its operations, internally and with its clients. Tandem also encourages partnerships through sports by sponsoring local teams. Tandem supports UN SDG 1 (No Poverty), 10 (Reduced Inequalities) and 17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goal).

The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals will continue to inform Tandem’s thinking and approach to its staff, the management and operation of the company, client interactions and projects, its impact on the environment and its contribution to the wider community.
