As part of our CSR Programme, Tandem Project Management Ltd.’s engineers volunteered for the Engineers Ireland STEPS Young Engineers Award Programme.
The Engineers Ireland STEPS Programme is a non-profit outreach programme that promotes interest and awareness of engineering as a future career. The STEPS Young Engineers Award 2020 is a competition that asks 3rd and 4th class students all over the country to design an engineering project that would help their community.
As part of the award curriculum, our engineers visited participating schools in Cork and Waterford during the week 25th – 29th November. The visit included a presentation from the engineers on engineering as a career and the students then presented their projects to the engineers. After the presentations, it was time for fun and learning with games designed by STEPS to open the students minds to engineering in their local environment and to the processes involved in a design and build project. It was a fantastic opportunity for young students to become more aware of engineering in the world around them and to see what it feels like to walk in the shoes of an engineer.
The level of engagement from the students was enlightening, our engineers reported very bright young minds concerned with topics such as homelessness, climate change and single use plastics pollution. The experience of presenting to students, broadening their understanding of what engineering is, hearing their ideas and discussing practical ways that they can move forward with their projects was heartening for our engineers, they all reported a desire to get involved again next year.
Tandem wish all the students luck with their entries for the Young Engineers Award, finalists will be announced during Engineers Week, February 29th – March 6th, 2020.
