Waterford Greenway

On Saturday, 13th May 2023, Tandem Project Management Ltd.‘s Thrive committee arranged a Waterford Greenway cycle.  Tandem personnel, family and friends enjoyed the cycle from Dungarvan to Kilmacthomas and back, 44kms in all.

The views were made spectacular by some glorious sunshine for our entire route.  Outside of Dungarvan, there were views over Clonea Beach with Helvick Head on the other side of the bay. Once we turned away from the coast there were some sheltered areas of track, but mostly open countryside with views of the Comeragh Mountains to the North. The group stopped for a fantastic lunch in the Coach House, Kilmacthomas.

Galtee More Hike

On 15th April, guided by Julie Reeves Walking, the Tandem hikers set off from Kings Yard near Mitchelstown to conquer Galtee Mor. For some, it was almost in their backyard, they had scaled it many times, for others it was the first time.

The day was bright and clear. The group climbed the southern slope, taking in the view of the golden vale below and beyond to the Knockmealdown Mountains. The route takes in a series of three ridges, each ridge offering a break before pushing forward to the next. Prior to the last stretch, a steep slope to the summit, Julie advised extra layers as, even on a calm day, there’s always wind at the summit.

The wind at the summit was incredible, it was so strong it would nearly knock you over. Julie found a spot in the lea of the wind, now looking towards the Northwest. It was such a clear day, the water of the River Shannon could be seen glistening in the far distance. A spectacular spot for lunch!

Heading down provided alternative views, river crossings, and a walk through the forest. It was a great day spent with colleagues and friends.

Alexion Safety Day

Tandem was delighted to host a safety day for our ongoing projects at Alexion in April 2023.

Colm Burke and Tim Mulhall spoke about the success of the project and the importance of a continued emphasis on safety. Brian Lavelle and Cathal Mc Kenna, presented on milestones achieved and the excellent safety record of the project.

The guest speaker, professional boxer Eric Donovan, delivered an insightful story of overcoming challenges, determination, and reframing your viewpoint when faced with adversity. Eric’s messages of wellbeing and resilience were both grounded and inspirational.

Thrive Committee Activity: Go Karting

On Thursday 27th July, Tandem’s Thrive committee organised a go-karting grand prix event at the National Kart Centre Cork.

A great evening was had by all participants. Some friendly competitive rivalry and laughter on the racetrack made for a very enjoyable event!

Well done to Maciej Gloskowski, the overall winner on the evening with Sam Lee in second and Oisin Griffin in third.

Advance Graduates Presentations 2023

In July 2023, Tandem held a celebration for its Advance Graduates. Tandem’s Advance Graduate programme aims to give graduates an insight into all aspects of the business in a structured and measured manner, to ensure they obtain broad experience on both a professional and personal level in these crucial initial years of their career.

The celebration was held in Blackrock Castle Observatory, a unique location, apt in that our graduates are ‘reaching for the stars’ in their careers!

The day consisted of presentations from graduates on their professional accomplishments and personal development over this past year. Jason Cullinane, Brian Flahive and Matthew Davidson presented on the experience they have gained and the areas that they have developed in throughout the programme. Presentations lasted 10 minutes after which they took questions from managers and peers.

Advance is a two-year programme and both Brian Flahive and Matthew Davidson were presented with their graduation certificates by Tim Mulhall. We look forward to Matthew’s continued success in Tandem and wish Brian well for his new adventure in Melbourne, Australia.

The graduates, peers and managers then enjoyed a celebratory lunch in the Blackrock Castle café.

STEPS Schools Visit 2022

During November, Tandem’s Engineers participated in the Engineers Ireland – STEPS Young Engineers Award Programme. The STEPS Young Engineers Award encourages 3rd and 4th class pupils to explore the world of engineering by developing a project that would help to improve their local community. Students form an engineering team and take on the challenge of using an engineering approach to find solutions.

Tandem’s engineers delivered virtual and in-person presentations to participating classes outlining what it is like to work as an engineer, the students then had the opportunity to showcase their projects and to receive feedback.

For our engineers, the experience delivered an opportunity to reflect on why they entered the engineering profession, they learned how to communicate engineering in a relatable way to children, and it opened their eyes to the creativity, imagination and the inquisitiveness that children have about engineering. Our engineers encouraged, guided and commended the children for their projects and on their teamwork.

Thanks to Engineers Ireland STEPS for delivering this STEM initiative in primary schools nationwide. Tandem wishes all of the participating schools the very best of luck in the Young Engineers Award competition!

World Stroke Day 2022

Last Saturday, 29th of October was World Stroke Day. To raise awareness, Tandem’s Thrive committee invited the Irish Heart Foundation to present at a lunch and learn.  During the presentation we learned that stroke is the third largest cause of death in Ireland.

Many thanks to Aileen Mc Donnell Gillic, for delivering an insightful presentation that focused on how to reduce the risk of stroke, stroke recognition and how to act FAST.

Knowing the signs of stroke and how to act could significantly impact a person’s chances of survival and to what degree they can recover.

Carrauntoohil Hike and Waterford Greenway Cycle 2022

In April, Thrive undertook a Waterford Greenway cycle. There were 16 participants cycling from Dungarvan to Kilmacthomas and back, 44 km in total. The cycle took us through some amazing countryside. Coming out of Dungarvan over the causeway we had views of the bay towards Helvick Head. The next section was a steady incline that led to a viewing point over Clonea Beach and the start of the Copper Coast. Turning inland from there, we had some sheltered areas of track but mostly open countryside with views of the Comeragh Mountains to the north. We stopped in Kilmacthomas for a lengthy break and well-deserved refreshments in The Coach House. The cycle back was as pleasant as the outward journey and the day was a great success with participants suggesting that we make it an annual event.

Thrive had 9 participants on their guided Carrauntoohil hike in August. The hike commenced from Lisleibane and took over an hour to reach the base of the Devil’s Ladder. The route took in the Devils Ladder and once it was surmounted, there was a slow and steady climb to the summit. The weather was amazing, resulting in incredible views from the Beara to the Dingle peninsula. Kerry Climbing guided the walk and provided a safe route and a steady pace to ensure that we all made it to the top. It was a seven-hour hike from start to finish, every minute was worth it for the spectacular views that we encountered on the day.
